Come meet Kevin Barnett, author of Living my Shadows: Dreams Do Come True, on Friday, August 11th at 6:30pm.
Living My Shadows
"They told me I wouldn't live to be 2 yrs. old because they found me starving on someone's porch.... I'm 55 now.... They told me I wasn't smart enough and that I didn't need a higher education...... I have an AA, BS and MS. They told me I would never be part of anything worthwhile. I'm a member of MD-Military-Holding-Lodge No. 122 - MWPHGL of Maryland, The Monday Cub (Oldest Social Club for African-American Men in Delaware and maybe the Nation--1876) recently resigned, The Drill Sergeant Association, and Bethel AME Church to name a few. They told me the Army wasn't the way to go and I was wasting my time and the organization wouldn't teach me anything. I was Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Detachment NCOIC, CID Investigator, Drill Sergeant and an EO Advisor for 5,000 Soldiers and Civilians just to name a few. It has taught me a lot. They told me I couldn't run a full marathon. I finished in the top half. They told me I was too small for martial arts--I received a 2nd degree black belt in Hapkido and a Red Sash (Chamber 5) in Kung-Fu. They told me that I will fail in life. The Lord has blessed me with a lovely wife, four grown men (sons), a lovely stepdaughter, and six grandchildren. It was rough getting there, but I'm here." (Started from the bottom) They told me I would never, never find my bloodline. Well, I found my birth mother, father, sisters and brothers and a host of cousins and combined my bloodline to my family that raised me and taught me everything I needed to know about life altogether into one big happy family. I now have two mothers and fathers. THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME THOSE THINGS.... KEEP YOUR HEAD UP, AND LIVE YOUR DREAMS. MAKE NO EXCUSES....
From Kevin's website
Kevin Barnett is an outstanding motivational speaker. The topics that he speaks on are based on his personal experiences in life. His life story of finding his birth parents after 56 years is the foundation of LivingMyShadows. Kevin’s experiences in the foster care program, being adopted and succeeding in the US Military will motivate anyone that has experienced obstacles in their life. The first 10 years of Kevin’s life was full of torture, hatred, and greed from his first two foster parents. He was found dying of malnutrition with a bottle of spoiled milk. He had to be fed through his ankles because he couldn’t open his mouth to drink. Those individuals were cruel; however, that was only the beginning. Kevin’s next foster parents were very mean and he suffered for nine years until one passed away and the parent was forced to give him back to the state. The next foster parents were the ones that he later took on their last name. Given all the obstacles that Kevin encountered, he was still able to succeed in life. He never gave up on finding where he came from. Kevin found his birth mother and the reason she had to make the toughest decision of her life. Kevin’s story will have you crying and laughing all at the same time.
Drive. Discipline. Focus. These core concepts represent the foundation for achieving success. As a military veteran, Kevin Barnett is no stranger to hard work and dedication. Now retired, Kevin’s passion for excellence and leadership continues to shape every aspect of his life. While serving in the military, Kevin acquired key life skills, which has helped him to achieve many goals. He believes that these core skills can benefit others as well. And he has made it his personal life mission to provide a roadmap for others to achieve the same success he has. He is in the business of transforming lives through transforming minds. Kevin believes that everyone has the potential to be great. All they need are motivation, resources and the opportunity to help them get there.
